Explore a variety of ways to solve a crime. 

Analyze fingerprints, handwriting and more!  

Put your skills to the test to solve a library mystery! 

Hands-on fun for school-age children.  

Wednesday mornings at 11:00AM, starting September 3rd

and continuing through October 1st  at the main library in Millersburg.

Wacky World of Science Booklets
Please note that our website program would not accept documents made in Microsoft Publisher format.  The following booklets have been converted to PDF format which can be printed and used "as is".  If you would like to have the documents in Publisher format, please e-mail Michele Skolmutch at mskolmutch@holmeslib.org.

The booklets are used by the children to record their findings during each experiment.

Wacky World of Science Booklet - January/February 2006
Paper Airplane Science - Experiment showing how the flight of a paper airplane does, indeed, involve science.
What's That Smell? - Experiments which will test the children's sense of smell.
Cool Color Experiments - Using cabbage juice as an indicator, the children will test different substances such as vinegar and dishwashing soap.  These substances will change the color of the cabbage juice.
Exciting Electricity - The children will be able to create a real electric circuit to light up a lightbulb or make a buzzer 'buzz'.
Wacky Water Experiments - The children will use a homemade Archimedes pump to move water from one dish to another.

Wacky World of Science Booklet - March/April 2006
Ping Pong Ball Science - Ping pong balls are used to explore the science of air.
Meet Samuel Morse -  this special WWS program will introduce children to Samuel Morse.  They will have the opportunity to work a homemade telegraph and decipher Morse Code.
Fun With FoodExperiments to help find the 'iron' in the food we eat.
Meet Helen Keller - this special WWS program will introduce children to Helen Keller.  They will have the opportunity to use sign language and 'read' items in Braille.
The Best of Wacky World of Science - A repeat experiment testing the elasticity of gummi worms!

Wacky World of Science Review Cards - Click here for the Microsoft Word template Review Card.  Each participant gets a card and then visits the experiment review stations on a rotation basis.  When each experiment is complete, they will receive a stamp.  After they collect four stamps, they receive a treat.
 


Helping Books Connection is a resource center compiled to assist families and caring adults with finding and using quality children’s literature as a tool for individual and group discussion activities. The Literature Database link is a collection of children’s literature titles, both fiction and nonfiction, covering topics that focus on ethical and personal issues relevant to young people. These titles have been reviewed and selected by librarians, teachers, and other trained adults working with children’s literature. Selection of the titles is based on the guidelines for choosing quality literature. The link to Additional Resources lists programs, web sites, books, videos, and other tools that provide guidelines for the use of children’s literature to generate discussion.
