Fun Reads for Kids
The votes are in! On January 18th the Caldecott and Newberry Medal committees announced the winners of these prestigious honors!
Below is a list of this years' winners and honors.
2010 John Newberry Medal Winner
When You Reach Meby Rebecca Stead and published by Wendy Lamb Books, an imprint of Random House Children's Books

Playaway? What’s that? A Playaway is a small, hand-held listening device that comes preloaded with a story. It’s easy to use. All you need is your own pair of earbuds and you’re ready to go! The Holmes County District Public Library’s Children’s Department has several Playaways available for checkout. You can use your own earbuds or purchase a pair from the library for $1.00 which are then yours to keep. Each Playaway comes with a fresh AAA battery and a lanyard so you can carry your story along while doing chores, going for a walk or riding in the car. What’s so great about Playaways? There’s no need for a separate player, like with a book on CD. As soon as you check out your Playaway, you can begin listening to it right away. Below are a few of the titles available at the main library.

School is out and you’re ready for the summer. But what can I do you ask? Why read, of course! Read and earn incentives by joining the Be Creative @ Your Library Summer Reading Program today! The main library’s program runs from June 8th – July 18th. All you have to do is read two hours each week to earn your incentive. You can also participate in a weekly drawing for some great prizes! Cleveland Brown’s items, passes to Seneca Caverns, Baylor Beach Park, the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and a wide choice of books are just some of the items you can try to win. Plus there are some great programs happening every Wednesday @ 11:00 a.m. beginning June 10th – storytelling, creative movement, crafts and a whole lot more!

Happy National Poetry Month!
Since 1996, April has been designated as National Poetry Month. Started by the Academy of American Poets, this month long celebration was created with the intent to celebrate the art of poetry. For more information on National Poetry Month click here.
The Children's Department has a wide selection of poems from some of today's most loved children's poets. Shel Silverstein, J. Patrick Lewis, and Jack Prelutsky are just a few of the poets you'll find.
Help celebrate National Poetry Month by checking out your favorite book of poetry or by writing a poem.
My two all time favorite poems are Sick and Sarah Cynthia Silvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out from Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein. What's yours?
