What is Story Time ?

Preschoolers, toddlers and their caregivers are invited to come to the library to enjoy stories, crafts, activites and songs.

Why is story time important?

Story times give your child the tools she needs to be ready to read when the time comes. Our story time programs incorporate the following six pre-reading skills set out by Every Child Ready to Read.


Narrative Skills - Being able to describe things and events and tell stories.

 In Story Time:
•Children are asked to retell a story or relate in conversation things they have experienced
•Children are asked to predict what might happen next

Phonological Awareness - Being able to hear and play with the smaller sounds in words.

 In Story Time:
• Children recite Nursery rhymes
•Children sing using rhythm and rhyme

Vocabulary - Knowing the name of things.

In Story Time:
• Children are ask if they recognize familiar objects
• Children are introduced to words that may not be used in common everyday conversation

Letter Knowledge - Knowing letter are different from each other, knowing their names and sounds and recognizing letters everywhere.

 In Story Time:
• Children recite the alphabet by pointing at each letter
• Children are asked if they see a particular letter on a page, poster or in a picture

Print Awareness - Noticing print, knowing how to handle a book and knowing how to follow the words on a page.

 In Story Time:
• Children are encouraged to hold books and turn the pages

Print Motivation - Being interested in and enjoying books.

In Story Time:
• We are optimistic that everything we do with books in storytime is encouraging children to be interested in and love books.
